Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is defined as Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) – increased blood sugar levels, with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Worldwide, 1 in 10 pregnant women is affected by GDM.
Women who are overweight, older, have previously had a large baby or have a family history of diabetes are more at risk.
Undiagnosed or inadequately treated GDM can lead to significant maternal & fetal complications. Moreover, women with GDM and their offspring are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
